The Importance of Preserving Martial Arts Traditions

White robe with a black belt laid across

Traditional martial arts are built on generations of shared knowledge. Techniques, philosophies, teaching methods, and cultural traditions are passed from teacher to student over decades of dedicated practice. Preserving that knowledge requires more than instruction alone.

Students often travel to seminars, workshops, and special training events to learn directly from experienced instructors. Researchers and writers dedicate years to documenting martial arts history, translating texts, and preserving traditions that could otherwise disappear.

The JMAC Foundation was established to help support those efforts. Emerging from the JMAC Ann Arbor community, the Foundation exists to strengthen opportunities for education, preservation, and lifelong martial arts study.

Financial limitations can sometimes prevent students, instructors, and researchers from participating in meaningful opportunities.

Travel costs, event expenses, and research projects all require resources that are not always easy to access. The Foundation helps bridge those gaps through grants and charitable support focused on preserving martial arts traditions for future generations.

Traditional martial arts represent living cultural traditions shaped through decades of teaching and practice. Supporting traditions ensures that students can continue learning techniques and the values that accompany them.

Meet the Founder

Nicklaus Suino’s lifelong dedication to martial arts reflects his mission of upholding Japanese martial arts culture. After nearly six decades of training and teaching, his work built JMAC Ann Arbor into a respected martial arts community rooted in education and preservation.
