How the JMAC Foundation Supports Students, Instructors, and Researchers

Progress in martial arts happens inside and outside of the dojo.

It’s marked by long weekends at seminars, time traveling across the state and beyond, and countless hours researching. The JMAC Foundation supports these efforts by removing practical barriers.

As a nonprofit in Ann Arbor created to support the Japanese martial arts community, the Foundation focuses on three groups: students, instructors, and researchers. 

Students 

Financial hardship can prevent students from attending a seminar or an intensive that could change their path.

Travel assistance helps students access training opportunities that otherwise wouldn’t be possible.

Instructors and Organizers 

Coordinating a seminar, securing a venue, and covering a visiting teacher's travel expenses determine whether a training experience can take place.

Support for organizers and instructors makes these events possible. 

Researchers 

Grants for research, writing, and translation give scholars and writers the resources to complete their work thoroughly.

Meet the Founder: Nicklaus Suino

Founder Nicklaus Suino's six decades in Japanese martial arts shaped the Foundation’s approach.

His work helped establish a nonprofit in Ann Arbor that reflects the teaching of martial arts: patience, humility, and care for others.
