Life moves quickly, often without offering time to slow down, reflect, and build connections. Traditional martial arts offer a space to do just that.
For many practitioners, martial arts are about more than physical training. Dojos are places where lifelong friendships are formed and values like humility, perseverance, and respect are reinforced through daily effort. Lessons learned in the dojo travel beyond training and into careers, relationships, and family life.
The JMAC Foundation was created to help preserve those experiences for future generations. Rooted in the JMAC Ann Arbor community, the Foundation supports the practice, study, and transmission of traditional martial arts through grants, educational support, and preservation efforts.
Many life-changing moments in martial arts happen outside of regular classes.
- A seminar with a respected teacher.
- A trip to train somewhere unfamiliar.
- A conversation that changes how a student understands their art.
These opportunities can shape someone for the rest of their life, but financial barriers can act as roadblocks for some individuals.
Our Foundation works to help remove those barriers. Support may include:
- Assistance for seminar travel
- Educational events
- Research projects
- Translation efforts
- Preservation initiatives that keep martial arts knowledge accessible for future practitioners
Training Rooted in Tradition
Founder Nicklaus Suino has spent decades studying, teaching, and sharing traditional Japanese martial arts. His lifelong commitment formed JMAC Ann Arbor, while inspiring the creation of a Foundation focused on preserving the deeper values of martial arts culture.
Traditional martial arts survive because communities continue to support them. Every contribution helps strengthen opportunities for students, instructors, researchers, and organizers working to carry these traditions forward.
